Learning piano
Joanne began learning to play piano around the age of 12. She received traditional style (reading-based) piano lessons and sat several AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) exams. As a mature student at the age of 25 years, Joanne was accepted into the Associate Diploma of Music course at the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music, Mackay Campus under the tutorage of Ms. Valerie Dickson. Upon graduation, Joanne received several prizes one of which was the Highest Prize in Keyboard studies.
Piano Teacher
Joanne started teaching traditional style piano lessons from 1988 working from home and also for several local music studios on the Central Coast of NSW including Coastal Music Studios and Yamaha.
Kindermusik
In 2001 Joanne did the training required to become a licensed Kindermusik educator and began teaching group music and movement classes for newborns to 7yr olds until 2014. During this time she was also awarded Maestro Status from Kindermusik International for her teaching excellence.
Church pianist
In 2004 Joanne joined the music ministry at St Anthony’s Catholic Church at Alexandra Hills as a church pianist/singer and led the music at regular church Masses until 2018 on a voluntary basis.
Simply Music piano lessons
In 2011 Joanne completed the training for a non-traditional playing-based piano method “Simply Music”. Prior to this Joanne was concerned that the traditional piano approach did not lead all students to a successful outcome and was looking for an alternative. Simply Music uses a single thought process and multi-sensory approach which makes it possible for anyone to learn to play piano regardless of age and ability. Students have lots of fun playing great-sounding songs immediately from their very first lessons. Styles include modern, classical, and blues.
Piano Accompanist
In 2013 Joanne joined the group Musical Memories as a piano accompanist and in 2014 was made Musical Director of the group. Musical Memories consists of a group of volunteer singers/performers who perform regularly in nursing homes, aged care and senior citizen centres around South Brisbane. Joanne resigned from her position of Musical Director and as a member of the Musical Memories group in 2020.
Kinesiologist
In 2019 Joanne began studying Kinesiology at the Brisbane College of Kinesiology and graduated in 2021 with a Diploma of Kinesiology. She provides kinesiology to many of her piano students in her studio.
